DHARAMSHALA, MAY 17: A Tibetan political prisoner who took part in the 2008 protests in Lhasa has been released on May 15 after completing his ten year sentence. Dashar, a native of Sershul, was released from the notorious Drapchi prison near Lhasa.

His daughter Nyidron who lives in Australia told the Voice of Tibet radio that she talked to her father through videocall as soon as he arrived home. "I could not talk much as there were many people at home who had come to greet him, and offer Khatas," said Nyidron.

She said she became emotional when her father apologized to her and his family for causing trouble to them. "I had come into exile long ago and it has been long since I last saw him. Going by his face, I saw him to be quite weak."

Dashar's actual date of release was March 15 but he was held for two more months for reasons not known to her daughter.

On 14 March 2008, thousands of Tibetan monks and lay people took the streets of Lhasa to carry a peaceful protest against the Chinese oppression. The protest quickly spread to other part of Tibet leading to the biggest anti-China protests in decades.

The exile Tibetan government estimates that over two hundred Tibetans lost their lives under the Chinese crackdown and thousands detained and tortured.
