DHARAMSHALA, March 9: The vice president of the German Bundestag is in town to take part in the official function of the 56th Tibetan Uprising Day here tomorrow at the Tsuglakhang courtyard.

“I am incredibly happy to be here. I come here as a good friend of Tibet to share your problem, your sorrow, your tears and your smiles”, Claudia Roth, vice president of the Bundestag, said at a press conference today at the Lhakpa Tsering Hall here.

Roth, who will be addressing tomorrow's official commemoration of the 56th Tibetan National Uprising day, said, “I am proud to be here to speak on this important occasion. It is a day of remembrance of the Tibetan uprising in 1959. We, as Germans, know it is important not to forget and to keep history alive. History is the basis to build a better future.”

Roth said China must engage in substantive dialogue with the representatives of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a meaningful autonomy for Tibet. A genuine autonomy for Tibet will ensure protection of Tibet’ religion, culture and environment, Roth said at a press conference today at the Lhakpa Tsering Hall here. “The Middle Way Approach is a very good basis for real dialogue and I urge the Chinese side to accept this reach-out from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people,” said Roth.

Roth said that countries which are supportive of Tibet are not enemies of China. She said Tibet’s strategic importance as a major source of water for several countries downstream must be remembered. She said the destruction of environment in Tibet has several negative impacts on climate of rest of the world.

Accompanying Claudia Roth were Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay, Dicki Chhoyang, minister of information and international relations, Mr. Wolfgang Grader, the president of the Tibet Deutschland Initiative, a leading German Tibet support group.

PM Sangay expressed his government’s gratitude to Claudia for accepting the invitation to attend the 56th Tibetan National Uprising day. Claudia has met His Holiness the Dalai Lama several times in 25 years of her association with Tibet and has been a supporter of the Tibet movement. “We are grateful that a person of such stature has travelled all the way from Germany to Dharamshala to show her support and solidarity. Your presence here sends a strong message of hope to us that despite the repression and suppression, there are friends, especially friends who matter, who take the trouble to be with the Tibetan people in our hour of need,” said Sangay.
