DHARAMSHALA, July 18: Sonam Wangchuk, an award-winning innovator and education reformist from Ladakh on whose life the noted Bollywood film 'Three Idiots' is based, said His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teaching of religious harmony and togetherness over the years is doing magic in Ladakh.

He was speaking Wednesday at the Ldumra Khadot Yarchos Chenmo, the 7th edition of Summer Buddhist Council, an initiative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, being held at Drikung Kagyu Thongdolphug monastery, Nubra from 15th to 23rd July.

“Your Holiness XIV Dalai Lama, I, Sonam Wangchuk from this tiny village Kyungru with some 50-60 people surrounded by few more villages, not more than 300 people want to convey to you what magic your message, your teachings are doing in Ladakh,” he noted.

He observed that the tiny village with the tradition of Drigung Kagyu had worked hard to host the Yarchos Chenmo, an event generally associated with the Gelug sect.

“And what I saw here as part of the magic here, the chief guest for the event is a Rinpoche from the Drukpa sect and when I crossed the Wari La pass, I saw a Geshe from Nyingma sect going back after teaching here,” he added.

Geshe Thupstan Rabgyas, Spiritual guidance of Kyabje Yongdzin Ling Rinpoche was the Chief Guest on the occasion, who spoke on the role of the event in highlighting the message of compassion, tolerance and peace.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama had presided over all the previous Summer Buddhist Councils held in Nubra and elsewhere in Ladakh.

Nubra is located at a distance of 100 km from Leh town.

Wangchuk applauded the contribution of the Muslim community of Nubra in the preparation of the event and called the presence of a Muslim Mullah Mohammed Iqbal at the event and a little Sikh boy performing Tibetan Buddhist Dialectics as a sign of religious harmony and hope for the future.

“Your Holiness may not be here today, we pray for your good health and long life, but your teachings are being absorbed by people somewhat as Eklavya learned from Guru Dronacharya without his presence,” he added.

The 9-day council also features teachings, debates, meditation, yoga and cultural events.

Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satya Pal Malik, is expected to grace the concluding function of the grand Summer Buddhist Council on July 23.
