DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 3: Thirteen policemen have reportedly been suspended for negligence, while being on security duty for the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Bodh Gaya, Bihar on Wednesday.

Gaya senior superintendent of police Garima Malik told the media that the suspended cops were missing from their posts, and that she will not tolerate any lapses in security arrangements for the Tibetan leader. The suspended lot consists two Sub-inspectors, one Assistant Sub-inspectors and ten constables.

The Tibetan leader arrived in Bodh Gaya on Jan. 1 for a month long stay. He is scheduled to give two teachings there in January: a three-day teaching on Dharmachakra Parivaretan Sutra on The Four Noble Truths (chokyi khorlo korwe do) & Sutra on Dependent Origination (tendrel chi do) from Jan. 5-7 and a teaching on Nagarjuna’s Commentary on Bodhicitta (jangchup semdrel) & Gyalsey Thokme Sangpos’s Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva (laklen sodunma) from Jan. 14 to 16.

The number of Buddhist pilgrims in the winter in Bodh Gaya is especially worrying for security arrangements with over 50,000 of them living and attending teachings in a concentrated area near the main teaching ground. In July 2013, nine serial explosions targeted the Mahabodhi temple complex which is considered the most sacred Buddhist structure in the world.

The 82 Tibetan leader is accorded the Z-plus security, one of the highest security detail by the Indian government wherever he travels in the country and exempted from frisking at the gate at all airports.

In 2012, the Dalai Lama during an interview with a UK-based paper revealed that there is a possible poisoning plot against him by China.

Here in Dharamshala where the Tibetan leader has been living for over four decades, the security around his residence on the hillock in McLeod Ganj, a comprehensive security detail of highly-trained Tibetan security guards in the inner cordon, and around 100 Himachal Police personnel around that are deployed.
