DHARAMSHALA, September 19: Taking part in an inter-religious meeting titled ‘Freedom Through Rules’, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said that humans give too much emphasis on the secondary level of difference such as race, color and religion, which create a strong sense of ‘we’ and ‘they’ in today’s world.
Citing example of children seeing an individual as human while disregarding any secondary level of differences, the Dalai Lama said, “On a deeper level, we are all same human beings with no differences. Therefore, we need the sense of oneness amongst every seven billion human being.”
Speaking at the Mandela Forum in Florence, the Dalai Lama was accompanied by Father Enzo Bianchi, Founder of the monastic community of Bose in Magnano, Professor Joseph Weiler, Rector of the European University Institute based in Florence, and Imam Izzedin Elzir, Imam of Florence at the inter-religious meet.
The Tibetan spiritual leader expressed his sadness over the incidents involving killings in the name of religion and differences of religion being the cause of problems in the world.
“Every major religion of the world carry message of love, compassion and tolerance. However, if the source of love becomes the cause of division it is very unfortunate,” the Dalai Lama said, who was earlier in the day presented a 15th century coin as memento by the organizer.
Currently in Italy on his four-nation Europe tour, the Dalai Lama yesterday was presented with honorary citizenship by the Mayors of Isola delle Femmine and Ventimiglia di Sicilia — both of them towns in Palermo.
The day also included His Holiness giving a public talk on ‘Peace Through Education’ at the same venue and for the following two days, he will be taking part in Science Symposium titled ‘The Mindscience of Reality’, which is organized by the University of Pisa in Pisa.
