Dalai Lama blesses Tibetan medicine's premiere institute in exile

Dharamsala, March 23 – The exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today said that the Tibetan system of medicine must evolve with research based projects aimed at enhancing the quality of the ancient Tibetan medicinal system. The 75-year-old Tibetan leader was speaking Wednesday at the 50th founding anniversary of the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute that was established in exile on March 23, 1961.

Lauding the Tibetan medicine’s premiere institute in exile for its achievements thus far the Tibetan leader however said it should continue to work harder in securing bigger goals in the field of ancient Tibetan tradition of healing. “The laid back – attitude over your achievements is the main obstacle to future progress. From the Buddhist point of view, the thought of having achieved so much and being contended with your achievements prevent our further progress,” said the Tibetan leader.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama also said the Tibetan doctors should share their knowledge and expertise in their field with doctors and researchers form other system of medicine.

Also present on the occasion were Dr. Rajeev Bindal, Himachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister, Minister, Kalon Tripa Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Penpa Tsering and ministers of the Tibetan cabinet.

Dr. Bindal said the people of Himalayan region share a lot of common things with the Tibetans and thus they should come together to preserve and promote the Tibetan system of herbal medicine."

Several former students of the institute and Tibetan doctors from various branches of the institute across India and Nepal have gathered here for the 50th anniversary celebrations.

A photo exhibition on the institute’s 50 years of evolution from a modest one-room cottage at Chopra House to a pioneer institute of Tibetan medicine and astrology with 55 branch clinics in India and Nepal was inaugurated by the Tibetan leader.

Also on display were scroll paintings of Tibetan medical practices, herbal medicines, astrological presentations and testimonies of patients.
