Dharamshala, November 21: The 7th Head of Nyingma, Kathok Getse Rinpoche, has passed away following an accident a few days ago in Nepal. According to reports, the accident occurred in a village near Kathmandu.

He was the fourth holder of the Kathok Monastery lineage who was appointed as the seventh head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism for a three-year term in January this year at the 29th Nyingma Monlam in Bodh Gaya. He succeeded Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche (1926-2015).
At the same meeting of the representatives of the Nyingma schools, it was decided to appoint Kathok Getse Rinpoche and five other Nyingma lamas as the supreme head of Nyingma tradition in a three-year tenure basis.

He spent most of his time at Namgyal monastery in Dharamshala before the enthronement. The original seat of the Kathok lineage is Kathok Dorje Den in Kham Khatok, Tibet and is over 840 years old.

Kham Kathok Satuan Tibetan settlement in Dehradun was expecting Rinpoche's presence at the settlement's 50th founding anniversary next February.

The six major Nyingma schools are Kathok, Dzogchen, Sechen, Mindrolling, Dorje Drak and Palyul.
