DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 9: The incumbent Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New Delhi, Ngodup Dongchung will run for the 2021 Sikyong elections but said will not engage in any campaign activities.
Speaking to Voice of Tibet, the former minister said the he could not refuse the hope and aspirations placed on him by his supporters to vie for the highest office. “I see it as my responsibility to not turn down the hope and expectations that my supporters have in me to run for the office of Sikyong.”
Ngodup added that he will not engage in any campaign activities, nor will he withdraw his candidature if he is still in the running, after the preliminary election results are announced. “I urge all my supporters to not engage in any untoward and malicious methods while they espouse their support for me and campaign for me,” he pleaded.
The veteran politician urged all Tibetans to elect a Sikyong (President) who can best serve the Tibetan community and best lead the movement ahead as supposed to voting on the basis of minor and divisive lines.
Ngodup Dongchung is a noted civil servant of the Central Tibetan Administration with more than 40 years of service. He has held key official positions over the years, including being a cabinet minister under both Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche and incumbent President Dr. Lobsang Sangay’s administration as the Minister for Security. He is currently serving as the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the Indian capital New Delhi.
