DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 10: Days after the US sanctioned 11 top officials from Hong Kong and mainland China including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, China has responded on Monday by sanctioning 11 US officials who have “behaved badly” over Hong Kong related issues.

On Friday, Washington announced sanction against 11 mainland Chinese and Hong Kong officials with plans to freeze their assets in the US for suppressing “freedom and democratic processes” in Hong Kong. Others on the list include Luo Huining, Beijing’s representative in Hong Kong and Hong Kong Commerce Secretary Edward Yau.

Announcing the sanctions, US Sec. of State Mike Pompeo said, “The Chinese Communist Party has made clear that Hong Kong will never again enjoy the high degree of autonomy that Beijing itself promised to the Hong Kong people and the United Kingdom for 50 years.

“President Trump has made clear that the United States will therefore treat Hong Kong as ‘one country, one system’ and take action against individuals who have crushed the Hong Kong people’s freedoms.”

In an apparent response, China on Monday announced sanctions on 11 US officials including Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, who have been the most vocal critics of the new security law imposed in Hong Kong by China. Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth and National Endowment for Democracy president Carl Gershman are also on the list.

“China has decided to impose sanctions on some people that behaved badly on Hong Kong-related issues,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Monday.

The tit-for-tat moves comes at a time when the relations between China and United States are at an all time low after months of sparring on many fronts. The relations between the two nations is set to sour further with observers anticipating similar moves by the election-bound President Trump.

  1. Another toothless tit-for-tat sanctions by organ harvesting China. CCP prostitute Carrie Lam recently boasting she dont care if US sanction her while her son attends Harvard just like Xi’s daughter did. The hypocrisy of these CCP leaders who tell their brainwashed people to hate the evil, capitalist West, yet hide their money, family, mistresses and assets there.

  2. Meanwhile, former pharmaceutical exec Alex Azar is chumming it up with Taiwan’s Tsai.
In the list of global fortune 500 rankings in the pharmaceutical sector, this is certainly pertinent. The top ten, in order or ranking, are: China Resources, J&J, Sinopharm, Roche Group, Bayer, Pfizer, Novartis, Merck, GSK, Sanofi.
