New parliament seat for Australasia region, Jhonang blocked

DHARAMSHALA, March 26: The Tibetan Parliament in exile today made an amendment the Tibetan charter to allot a parliamentary seat for the region of Australasia region including Australia, New Zealand and Asia (excluding India, Nepal and Bhutan).

On the tenth day of the ongoing Budget Session of the 15th Tibetan parliament in exile, discussion of document number 18 of the parliamentary proceedings took preceded a voting to decide whether a new seat should be created for the Australasia region which has substantial number of Tibetan population including those who immigrated to Australia under former political prisoners’ rehabilitation program.

29 members voted in favor of the creation of new seat for the Australasia region while two seats for Jhonang tradition under religious sects did not get the same support and had to be dropped as it acquired only 17 votes.

An amendment to the charter requires the support of two thirds of the total number of members.

The parliament will resume tomorrow afternoon as the members will be attending the inaugural day of the 20th Shoton Festival of Tibetan opera which will be graced with his presence by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
