Tibetan parliament’s 8th session concludes, urges China to probe Tibet’s situation

DHARAMSHALA, September 24: The Tibetan Parliament has urged the Chinese government to investigate the situation inside Tibet where 132 Tibetans have resorted to self immolation to protest the government since 2009.

“I hope the Chinese president Xi Jinping will take a personal interest in Tibet and probe the real situation inside Tibet. I sincerely hope that the Chinese president will engage the Tibetan representatives into substantive dialogue regarding Tibet’s future”, said Penpa Tsering, speaker of the Tibetan parliament in Exile that concluded its eighth session earlier today.

The parliaments September session discusses the annual reports submitted by the seven departments of the Central Tibetan Administration which renounced the name “Tibetan Government in Exile” after a national level gathering called in 2011.

The just concluded session unanimously passed resolutions of solidarity and mourning for the Tibetan self immolators, and a separate resolution for Lhamo Tashi, the latest Tibetan to self immolate in protest against China. Sources say that 22 year old Tashi timed his self immolation protest with the visit to India of the Chinese president on September 17.

The parliament also directed the committee set up by the Kashag to probe the allegations of misuse of power against the health Kalon Tsering Wangchuk regarding a case of embezzlement of public funds in a Bylakupee branch of a clinic run by the department. The Speaker said there is be zero tolerance against corruption in the Tibetan parliament. The Tibetan parliament directed the committee to submit report by Nov. 25 to the Standing Committee of the parliament.

The session also saw election of new Tibetan Supreme Justice Commissioner, Election Commissioner, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Auditor General and Audit Secretary.
