Dharamsala, April 1 – A Tibetan student has won the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship for her academic performances and leadership abilities. Daughter of Tibetan parents living in San Francisco area, Tenzin Seldon is an active member of the Students for a Free Tibet. Her father Ngodup Tsering was a former president of the Tibetan Association of Northern California.
A junior at Stanford University, she joins the company of past winners, including governors, CEOs, Senators and the current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This is a proud moment for the Tibetan community.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive federal scholarship granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service.
According to the Washington Post, the Truman Scholarship’s “sole aim is to pick out people with potential to become leaders-then provide support to help them realize their aspirations.”
The US Congress created the scholarship in 1975 as a living memorial to the 33rd president of the United States.
