For Immediate Release:

TORONTO, April 23 – Canadian-Tibetans and supporters will be holding a candlelight vigil to support demonstrations across the country and around the world to raise awareness of the world’s youngest political prisoner — imprisoned by the People’s Republic of China.

Event: Candlelight Vigil for Panchen Lama to commemorate his 17th birthday
Date: Tuesday, April 25, 2006
Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Venue: Chinese Consulate, 240 St George Street
(at St. George Subway exit, north side of Bloor St. on St. George)

Background on the Panchen Lama

The Panchen Lama or Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is revered by Tibetans as the second most important religious figure, aside from the Dalai Lama. He was only six-years-old when he and his parents were abducted from their home in Tibet by the Chinese government on May 17, 1995. In 1996, the Chinese government admitted that the Panchen Lama, who was recognized by the Dalai Lama, was under their “safe custody”, yet not a single person has seen him for the past 11 years.

“We urge the Canadian government to initiate dialogue with Chinese officials to demand the release or confirm the whereabouts of the Panchen Lama, his family and other members of his monastery Tashi Lhunpo”, said Tsering Khangsar, CTC President. “The Chinese government to date has not responded to international pressure concerning the well-being of this important buddhist monk and concerned Canadian citizens and supporters of human rights globally want action now”.
