The first anniversary of the Mysore chapter of the Indo-Tibetan Friendship Society (ITFS) ran into trouble when hundreds of activists of the Bhagat Singh Yuva Sene barged into the function venue on Sunday evening, disrupting celebrations. The incident occurred at the Mahajana College premises at J L Puram here.

Police resorted to a lathi-charge to drive the agitating activists away. Nine activists were arrested.

The Sene group, led by one Lakshmikantha, tried to barge into the venue, demanding cancellation of the anniversary celebrations, and accusing Tibetan refugees of committing atrocities.

They demanded the immediate eviction of Tibetans from Bylakuppe and other refugee camps in the State.

Police claim that the activists did not comply when they tried to convince them that the ITFS anniversary was not the platform to raise their demands. Some activists barged into the function venue, venting their ire by damaging the items on the dias. The Sene leader sustained head injuries in the melee, prompting the activists to stone the police.

Sensing serious trouble, the police resorted to caning to disperse the activists, said Deputy Commissioner of Police K T Balakrishna.

Cases of obstruction of duty of government servants and rioting have been booked against the arrested.

Earlier, the activists said that though they had held demonstrations at the DC’s office in the past, demanding the Tibetans’ eviction from refugee camps, no action had been taken.
