Tibetan Parliamentarians after the Convention

Dharamshala – At the invitation of International Campaign for Tibet, Netherlands, 12 members Tibetan Parliamentarians’ delegation visited Amsterdam from 20-23 November after the World Parliamentarians’ Convention on Tibet, Edinburgh.

On 20 November, Pema Jungney, Chairman of the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies and Dolma Gyari, Vice Chair of the Assembly, participated in the Public Panel discussion on ‘Future of Tibetan Democracy’ in Felix Meritis, Amsterdam.

Honourable Boris Dittrich, a member of Dutch Parliament, also participated in this panel discussion which was moderated by Ms. Christa Meindersma, who received bullet injury during the 1987 demonstration in Lhasa. She also worked for the UN for several years.

On 21 November, Chair and Vice Chair were joined by 10 Tibetan parliamentarians.

For the next three days, the delegation attended meeting with members of Dutch Parliament at Hague. The delegation also held a separate meeting with Mr. Piet de Klerk, Ambasador at large for human rights, and other officials of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Besides the basic parliamentary structure of both countries, these meetings also discussed a wide range of topics covering human rights issues, concerns over political prisoners including His Serenity the Panchen Lama, His Holiness’ Middle Way approach, enviromental concern, China’s Western Development Programme, problems of Tibetan asylum seekers in Netherlands and the challenges of the Tibetan refugee communities etc.

The delegation also met with the Tibetans living in Netherlands at Maitreya Institute, Amsterdam, and discussed on the steps taken by the Central Tibetan Administration towards resolving the general welfare of the Tibetans in Netherlands.
