Prague, June 3 – Former Czech President Vaclav Havel, is scheduled to meet with the Dalai Lama later this month to receive a prestigious award for his support of the Tibetan people, Havel’s aide said on Thursday.

Jakub Hladik said the Tibetan spiritual leader is expected to present Havel with the Light of Truth Award at a ceremony to be held in Berlin on June 16.

Havel was to receive the award last year in Vancouver, but had to cancel the trip because of ill health.

Hladik said a private meeting with Dalai Lama is also planned during Havel’s trip to Berlin.

The Light of Truth Award has been given annually since 1995 by the Dalai Lama on behalf of the Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet. It honours people for “outstanding contribution to public understanding of Tibet and its current plight,” the ICT says on its web page.

During his time as president, Havel, a former dissident, repeatedly invited the exiled Tibetan leader to Prague.
