TYC Indefinite Hunger Strike Update

The TYC led Hunger Strike receives continues support and solidarity from every passing people. The determined hunger strikers, despite cold and windy atmosphere staged inside a white tent, surrounded by traditional wind horse prayer flags and Tibetan national flags hung on its two sides with a banner advocating ‘INDEFINITE HUNGER STRIKE’. The Board member of both the Tibetan Youth Congress (Central Executive Committee) and the board members of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of New York and New Jersey, along with some volunteers facilitated the strike with distributing pamphlets to every passerby.

On the third day of the Hunger Strike, the two Taiwanese representatives Mr. Micheal Yean and Mr. Yau-Tien Shih from the World United Formosans for Independence-United States Headquarters based visited the hunger strikers and presented a banner saying ‘CHINA OUT OF TIBET’, to express and symbolize their support and solidarity. The Taiwanese representatives also presented a letter from their organizational Chirman Mr. Bob I Yang expressing their deep concern about the problems of Tibet and also expressed that Tibet and Taiwan share the same goal of redeeming their country from the brutal Chinese power. Mr. Michael Yean and Mr. Yau-Tien, as a token of their concern over the Tibetan cause, sat along with the three indefinite hunger strikers fasting for 8 hours.

Mrs. Kiran Bidi from India visited the Hunger Strikes and shared her precious moment telling to the hunger strikers about the importance of the precious life. Mr. Sonam Wangdu, one of the Hunger Striker answered, “Life is important, but my country comes first.”

Representatives from the United Nations Human Rights Commission and some of the prominent personals visited the hunger strikers and express their concerns and support. The health conditions of the three hunger strikers are checked everyday by the local Tibetan doctors and nurses and their daily medical reports are being prepared.

Besides, in the 60th Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, the Tibetan Youth Congress representative Mr. Jamyang Choephel (International Relations Officer of TYC) has attended and will make the oral statement to the 60th Session of UN human rights commission with regards to TYC led indefinite hunger strike movement in New York.

Tibetan Youth Congress made contacts with the concerned authorities of UN bodies, UN Secretary General, member states and the President of the United States by sending petition for a favourable consideration to the demands put forward by the three hunger strikers.

Besides the three members for the Indefinite Hunger Strike, supporters are staging Relay/Chain Hunger Strike on the side to show support and solidarity for the common goal.
