South Africa – On a hot humid summer night, 60 people gathered at a local antiquarian bookshop in Durban to remember the March 10 anniversary when 45 years ago the citizens of Lhasa – the capital of Tibet took to the streets in protest against the Chinese occupation of their country.
To celebrate this event the Tibet Society of South Africa (TSSA) arranged for Mr. Tashi Wangdu, a staff member of the South African Office of Tibet to give a talk and exhibit his photos, which documented his recent visit to Tibet. Called “Tibet through the eyes of an exile”, members of the TSSA and the public were enthralled by Tashi’s story.
During Tashi’s stay in Durban, the TSSA arranged for him to visit a number of schools. Tashi Wangdu, gave a series of talks to over 300 school children. The eagerness and enthusiasm by the school children to interact with Tashi and learn more about Tibet is an encouraging sign that there is a continual growth of interest in Tibet and the hard work of the dedicated few that makes up the TSSA is being rewarded here in South Africa.
