China has arrested four persons for trying to smuggle in a sack of Chinese pistols and explosives into the country from Tibet, Radio Nepal said quoting security sources.

Maoist Hiralal Shrestha along with Gaylzen Sherpa were arrested at Khasa, Radio Nepal said. The names of two others were not mentioned.

The four have been taken to Shigatshe for questioning, the Radio said. Shigatshe is the second largest city in Tibet after Lhasa.

The Radio did not say when the illegal consignments were intercepted. Maoists have been using Chinese pistols in murderous attacks, particularly in Kathmandu Valley.

Rebels have robbed the pistols from police but this is the first time official confirmation of arms and explosives being smuggled from Tibet.
