Dharamsala, October 10 – Exiled Tibetan students have found a new way to augment funds for their political activities.
Recently, they organized a multi-cultural show here, which included performing traditional Tibetan folk dances.
The president of Tibetan Youth Congress, Kongchok Yangphel, said that the show was conducted to raise funds for their political acitivities.
“We have to organise different political activities in Delhi so we need a lot of funds. Its not easy to ask donations from people. So we have organised this multi-cultural function. The funds raised will make it easy to promote political activities in Delhi,” Yangphel said.
About 134,000 Tibetans live in exile, the vast majority in India or Nepal, and of them less than half were born in their homeland.
After an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers fled to India in 1959 and set up his government-in-exile at Dharamsala in 1960.
The Tibetan government-in-exile hopes to return to Tibet and form a free democratic government there some day.
