Darjeeling, June 9 – The Tibetan community here is set to welcome defence minister George Fernandes, who is scheduled to visit the hill town on June 12.

The minister has accepted an invitation from the Tibetan Refugee Centre (TRC), Darjeeling, and will inaugurate the organisation’s mobile clinic that day.

Darjeeling secretary of TRC C. Rinchen said the organisation was happy that the minister, who is considered “a friend of Tibetan refugees”, had accepted the invitation.

“The mobile clinic van was donated by an NGO from Taiwan after we had approached Siemens for the same. It is equipped with X-ray, ultrasonography and ECG facilities,” he added. “We plan to use the van in places where it can be taken. We can also take the van to Bangalore and Orissa, where we regularly hold camps. There is a large concentration of people from our community in these places,” Rinchen said.

Fernandes is scheduled to fly from Bagdogra to Lebong in Darjeeling around 9.30 am.
