LHASA, May 8 – Residents of Lhasa awoke Thursday morning to see their city blanketed in white as the unseasonable snowfall covered poplars and willows in Potala Palace Square in this capital of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

Ironically, the city had enjoyed sunny weather for the past fewdays, and peach trees were blossoming in the courtyards of some residences.

According to the local meteorological station, this unexpected snowfall was attributed to a combination of cold air and vapor caused by low pressure moving eastward from an area north of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
