The Dalai Lama says there will be a 'setback'' in the Tibetan cause when he dies. The 74-year-old spiritual leader said that when he dies, 'there will be a setback, there's no doubt,'' but added that a very healthy, cultivated new generation is rising with the potential to lead. His Holiness the Dalai Lama giving teachings on ‘The Three Principle Parts and Generating Altruistic Mind Enlightenment’ (Lamtso Namsum and Semkyi) at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Hall in Tokyo on October 31, 2009. The exiled Tibetan leader stressed on the importance of cultivating a compassionate mind.
Tokyo, October 31 - “If someone is causing trouble to you, be more compassionate to that person. You should realise through understanding that the person is sinning,” said the exiled Tibetan leader to an audience of over 5,000 in Japan’s capital city, today.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachings on ‘The Three Principle Parts and Generating Altruistic Mind Enlightenment’ (Lamtso Namsum and Semkyi) at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Hall was jointly organised by the Liaison office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Tibet House Japan), Shikoku Buddhist Association (Ehime・Kagawa・Kochi・Tokushima) and Okinawa Mahabodhi Association.

The Tibetan scholar Je Tsong Khapa (1357-1419), the main teacher of the first Dalai Lama authored ‘The Three Principle Parts’.

Before beginning the discourse, His Holiness shared his views on the importance of cultivating a compassionate mind for one’s own physical health and emotional well being.

“Scientists these days are saying that negative emotions such as anger, fear, greed and envy harms the immune system,” said His Holiness through a Japanese translator. “There is no syringe for happiness. You can be happy only when you reduce the gap between ‘I’ and ‘they’ with a compassionate mind,” added the Nobel Peace Laureate.

His Holiness observed the potential in all major world religions of cultivating peace and happiness and also mooted the idea of achieving a compassionate and affectionate mind through the integration of secular practices in the modern education system.

While speaking on practicing compassion on your enemies, His Holiness cautioned the audience that complying and tolerating oppression was not the correct understanding of compassion.

“You should oppose the wrong actions of your enemy but have compassion for the person committing those mistakes,” said the Tibetan leader.

Responding to a question from a young Japanese girl on how to ‘like’ herself, His Holiness said, “If you examine yourself properly you will realise that only when you are sad you are unhappy about yourself but when you are happy you love yourself.”

The Tibetan leader in encouraging words explained that problems and troubles should be seen as opportunities to develop inner strength and to make one’s life successful.

Japan has an alarming suicide rate, the second highest in the developed world.

At the end of the teachings, famous Japanese personalities including Shinsho Wakaomi, secretary of Zenkoji Temple which in 2008 had refused to be a part of the 2008 Olympics torch relay, Kurana Chibana former Miss Universe 1st runner up 2006 and Rei Dan popular actress walked up the stage to greet the Nobel Peace Laureate.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is scheduled to hold a dialogue with scientists tomorrow.
